#33 Companionship unity

The purpose for the subject line:

Hermana Boggess and I found ourselves at 4 o clock this morning having companionship study. Hahaha literally it was the funniest thing. We both have a severe problem talking in our sleep so we combined our efforts to have companion study. She was asking me what we were studying and I was telling her random pages of Preach My Gospel.  Which is so nice because mom, I can't tell you how many times I have taught Lesson 1 by myself at 3 in the morning to my wall. It's nice to finally have someone help me out 😉 my sleep talking and walking has only gotten worse on the mission... My poor companions. We woke up this morning just laughing so hard. Also juat while I'm at it, we both have light switches right at the head of our beds and each of us at least once accidently turns the light on during the night, it's actually kind of creepy but hey what can you do. 

Anywho enough of the goofy stuff. We finally taught some investigators this week. Alll of our investigators just like to meet with us out in the chilly air but it's okay, we're glad to be teaching anyone. The really really hard thing is that seriously all but one of our investigators works on Sundays. It's such a pena because the economy is pretty bad here I guess so work is just hard to find in general. We are praying a lot and are definitely needing some celestial help with that. But hope is something we do have. 

We had 4 eating citas this week and all the food was just so yummy. The members here are so very sweet. Our favorite lunch is always with Paco and Beatriz. They are gems sent from heaven. Seriously every time we go to their house they just treat us like queens. They just wait upon our every need. This week we had some yummy soup stuff and then we each got a plate full of huugggee shrimps and in Spain they just keep the bone and head and guts and everything. They serve it whole, I don't really know why, maybe just to show it's fresh or somwthing.  But we are these huge shrimps and then sucker on their heads with their beady little black eyes hahaha. Gross. But it was good! And they brought me back a whole bucket of green olives from Madrid. Kinds souls. Also just side note,  it's really funny cause they just call me Roots cause they cant say my name its humorous. But ANYWAY after the lunch we teach em a bit and we taught about faith and repentance and hermana Boggess and I were just ending with our testimonies and Beatriz chimed in and bore a beautiful testimony. And then Paco as well said something so so important. He said he has strengthened his relationship with God and since he has been coming to church and meeting with us and really praying, he has received so many answers and so much comfort and also that everyday he learns something new from God. It's is such an incredible thing to see investigators deepen their relationship with God for themselves because they want to . HE REALLY DOES ANSWER PRAYERS!

Also on Saturday we met with Celina. She's like 20 from Guinea Equatorial in Africa. She meets with us every week but she just kinds listens to us and doesn't really show much interest but this week she actually asked questions and gave input. We showed her one of the Easter videos to explain the Atonement a little bit and she loved it. She understood and she actually showed expression which is seriously a miracle. Prayers answered, sabes?

Also Saturday night we went contacting crazy and hermana Boggess and I were talking about how much we just want to teach a family so we talked to a bunch of families. We did find one who was interested. We just showed everybody the #lighttheworld video and it was so lovely because we were contacting next to this giant Christmas light tree and it just felt like Christmas. And they had this giant farmers market/fair thing so we decided to treat ourselves to some Gofres. I'll attach pictures of all of this. 

And the yesterday we got a new ward mission leader and we are really excited for that! This new bishop is just turning this ward around. He is just so precious I just love him haha. Also it was the primary program yesterday and if you think that's cute in America, it gets so much cuter in Spain with the the little children singing and speaking with their little voices in spanish it is just so dang cute. 

Hermana Boggess is doing so well she is so diligent and is always working to be better. She has inspired me a ton. She is from alpine Utah, she's 6 feet tall and she is ACTS JUST LIKE JACOB HAUVER HAHAHAH we get along so great. She's the companion I have always wanted. But let's be honest, all of my comps hab E been incredible. But we just have so much fun together and still work so hard together. It's the best of both worlds. She makes me go running in the morning and I hate it hahahaha. Also ahe has this crazy talent where she can say any word backwards like really fast. She barely hesitates and can seriously do it with any word and even small sentences it's the craziest thing haha I'm such a fan. This Thursday we get to go to Murcia with the whole other half of our mission for a Christmas conference. And we're having a talent show and she's gonna do that... And I'm expected to do something but I have no talent... so maybe I'll just pit my fist in my mouth and call it good.

5. I forgot to write about this last week, but last pday we were in city center and their were these people doing a flash mob to whoever would throw away trash to try to promote city cleanliness. So The elders knew about it and tricked us into throwing away a piece of paper and then out of no where all these men and women came with a bunch of brass instruments started playing When the Saints Come Marching In and the woman started dancing with us ans it was actually really fun haha I loved it. So this is the picture we took after it.

HI MOM HOW ARE YOU I'M GREAT. THIS WEEK HAS BEEN LONG HAHA BUT IT'S OKAY. so Tuesday Hermana Cornwall and I packed up to Malaga to go collect our new companions and it was fun to see pres and hermana Anderson again. It was so fun to find out who my companion was! We were the first ones to get called. Also it was weird because I saw all of my friends going home and it was actually really sad.

 This week has been such a blur. I don't even know what to say. We brought our cute companions back to Almeria. They are just so excited and so pumped to do the work. Our piso is all decorated for the Christmas season ahhh. We have been doing little services for the light the World. We gave water bottles to some needy men and it was fun. My companion loves to talk to old men it's so funny.

We did something different this week. All of the missionaries in Almeria went to the hermanas area to contact for an hour and it was actually really fun to do it all together. We got a bunch of futures and just talked to everyone. It was so fun and I could really tell that the spirit puts the words in our mouths when we need them.

 Some thing I have come to love on the mission is to testify. At the beginning of the mission, I used to dread contacting people who said they were atheist, now it's my favorite thing! It's so wonderful just to tell them that at least I know that God is real and that He loves them. Ah there is nothing better. My companion just wants to teach so bad but all of our citas have failed but we still have faith, sabes? Its going to be SUCH a great 12 weeks with sweet Hermana Boggess. She is a ray of sunshine and reminds me lots and lots of Jacob Hauver hahahaha.

HI family, friends, and straight up randomers. This week has been....something else. I'll start with...TUESDAY.

Hermana Lighten has been so sick. So I had time to read like 5 chapters of the Book of Mormon instead of one! It was actually a righteous party. Also! I had time to sew a dress. BECAUSE the Elders investigator, Valentina got baptized, and she doesn't have many dresses or anything. So in our piso we had this super cute black dress that was a large and Valentina is teeny tiny. So I sewed

It up into a small with some thread I found in the piso. And it actual looked so good. I'm so proud of myself, you taught me well ,mother. I'm considering taking up sewing.  And then I put it on and took pictures because I was just so pumped. And yeah...that is what I got to do on my 8 month mark.

 And then the rest of the week just got so good. We had an incredible lesson with Alma, I'm pretty sure I wrote about contacting her last week. But allow me to expound a little bit. I read Elder Uchtdorf's talk this week about "returning to our heavenly home" and I was so intrigued with the idea that we are all here on earth with the purpose to return home. Right after I was reading in Preach my Gospel about the light of Christ. Every single person in Spain has been given the light of Christ, therefore every single person has that inward compass that is trying to guide them home. It is more evident in some than others, but I feel so privileged to help the people remember their eternal identity and spark that interest in them where they want to return home. Even though we have all passed through the veil, we have the Holy Ghost slowly bringing things to our remembrance, like the reality of our Premortal life. When we remember God, we remember that He knows us and that we knew Him before.

 We were in a cita with Alma who has been angry at God for quite some time now. She was born with an infirmity and she is very upset, yet she still believes in God. We taught her about our Pre-existence which she agreed just made sense to her. We taught her about our purpose here on earth and how through the fall, things became imperfect. We taught her about our loving Savior who has suffered everything that she had, and who has His arm outstretched to her to pull her up. She would become so accepting of what we were saying, even smiling, and then Satan would remind her of her upset feelings she had toward God.  We just testified to her of how loving God is and how He is All Mighty and All Knowing. We asked her to pray to be able to feel God's love. So she did. And while she prayed, I prayed, and my companion prayed. We prayed that she would be able to feel something. She did. She voiced in her prayer, "Father, I miss you."  And just then, through the incredible opportunity we have to talk with our Father, she felt the desire to return home. Through her light of Christ, she felt the desire to know God again. The spirit spoke to her spirit and she felt God's love. And through that experience I felt God's love also. 

AND THEN something else incredible happened. We were doing our weekly planning and we had to cut it in half because we had two citas inbetween. So we were planning and it was going all right, but we kind of hit a wall and weren't sure what to do with some investigators. We decided to pray about it and then leave to go to our citas. The citas we had just so happened to be with the two investigators that we were having trouble with.

 [We went to our cita with Paco who we are teaching and his girlfriend Beatriz who is a menos activa. . We asked how the papers for her divorce were coming and they said they would get them next month! And they're so excited and I am too! This is seriously a miracle because we have been praying so hard for those papers to come so that they can get married and he can be baptized]

 But another miacle is that Paco, (our investigator) started talking about how excited he was to finally be able to be baptized. He was able to go to a convert baptism on Saturday and he was so excited to see how he would get baptized. He pushed his way to the front ao that he made sure to see and then requested that a bigger man baptized him that could hold his weight 😂This was surely an answer to our prayers just to know that he still was thinking about baptism and that he is so excited to be baptized. The other investigator, we weren't sure if she was actually interested in our messages. She would listen, and pray, and read, but still wasn't progressing so much, and we knew it but we just weren't sure why we felt like she was missing something. So we went to her cita and she was able to express to us some of her feelings and even the spirit told us so evidently that she needed more learning, that she quite hadn't understood everything the first time missionaries taught her so we are gonna go over some things again. I was completely satisfied with that answer and am pumped for Pilar. 

So what I, Hermana Rust, am trying to say is that GOD LOVES US SO MUCH. And he doesn't withhold blessings from us. And that the best thing about being a missionary is that you see how much Heavenly Father loves your investigators, and in turn, you feel how much he loves YOU! And that i think so often we dont see prayer as the fabulous thing that it is. Feeling stressed? Pray. Feeling happy? Pray. Feeling unloved? PRAY. When you pray, you will always always always feel God's love and that is a promise. We have the opportunity to pray always to a supreme being, all powerful and all loving. That's something that shouldn't be taken lightly. That's INCREDIBLE. My mind is seriously blown. 

I just wanna take some time and talk more about my favorite people, Paco and Beatriz. I have never met two people who are so KIND. They invite us over to eat and Paco knows that I love Aquarius so he goes and buys Aquarius just for me. And he knows that I love anchovie flavored olives so every time we go over there they give me a jar of olives. The last time we went to eat, Beatriz (from El Salvador) made Papusas! Do you remember that so Salvador restaurant we would go to with Natalie in Provo and we always got those little pancake things with cheese and meat and beans? And they're called papusas? Well she made them and it made me sooo happy! She even had that jar of pickled vegetable stuff that they would put on the table and you'd put on top. Ah it was so good. And then they always give us all the left over food and offer to drive us home. They just love us so much and I just love them so much. Beatriz always tells us that we are like her daughter's and we just feel so loved in their home. 

ALSO THANKSGIVING. Like I said, our Ecuadorian district leader took it upon himself to make us a turkey as a token of gratitude. And it was actually really good! It had stuffing inside that was tasty. And he made mashed potatoes and we went around the table and said what we were grateful for. It felt like we were in the States :') 

In other news, this week is transfer week! I am staying here in Almeria, Hermana Lighten se va a Cartagena, and I'll be getting a new new new companion straight out of the MTC. I'm so excited! We got a new bishop yesterday and we went to ward council and I am so pumped because he is gonna be straight fire. He is sharp as a knife and the nicest guy and he basically just told everyone that ward council is going to be focused on the obra misional heeeeyyyyyy. Three cheers for Bishop Lopez 🙆‍♀️🙆‍♀️🙆‍♀️

Also the new Light the World video is incredible. I love love love the solid 30 seconds it shows where Christ is physically lifting people up. When  see that it makes me all shivery and happy. I don't know about you all, but I have definitely felt Christ lifting me up like that. And what a beautiful opportunity we have this season to lift others. 

This was the longest emails and I don't think I have covered everything but I'll add some pics. 

#30 Sent Nov 20th.

This week we had hours and hours and hours to contact. WAHOO.

We met some dudes from Poland and Italy and Holland. The polish was cool. The Italian was sassy. And the Hollish was crazy. We had a PANCAKE FLIPPING GOOD lesson with Ampa. We taught the plan of salvarion directly out of The Book of Mormon and it was dope on a rope as you would say mom. Hermana Lighten and I took some time to find some scriptures to go with each phase of this grand plan God has given us and he was just soaking it all in. We talked about everything We have to do to get back to God and he agreed  to all of it except he refuses to say the word baptism.  Hahaha pray for Ampa.  We met with our friends Paco and Beatriz. They are the sweetest pieces of pie I just love em. We also taught them the plan of salvation. ALMA 40 11-12 are some really solid scriptures. They make me so happy Every time I read them. 

This week we were walking out of a cita with a menos activo and we decided to contact a woman. She at first wasn't very open to talk she said she was upset with God for some things that have happened in her life. We decided just to keep testifying to her that God loves her and has a plan for her. We were testifying to her for a while and she began to cry saying that she knew God sent us to her. It was a really happy experience. We set a cita with her after.   We had interviews with President Anderson. He is so good. In our interviews we always just sit back and chill because... I don't really know why haha our interviews are always pretty chill. He tells me about his fam, I tell him about my investigators.

News: I'll be the first tell ya that before the mission I really didn't fancy any kind of olives that weren't black.

But now.......... I ate half of a jar of Aceitunas for breakfast. Aceitunas are olives that aren't black. 

I'm changed. 

This week was SOO LONG we did lots and lots of contacting and planning for our solid investigators who are gonna be baptized soon (fingers crossed) so I'll just start listing some things. 

Hermana Lighten just goes contact crazy and it it incredible. She seriously has no shame and stops everyone. Even the hombres. And the jovenes. And the hombre jovens. And we just have fun! We talked to some really nice people AND THE BEST NIGHT EVER WAS WHEN WE MET YAHYA (Which is like Johnny in Arabic, fun fact). We started speaking to him in spanish And we was like uuhhhhh English? And we were like YES! So he is from Jordan and I didn't even know that was a country. But he said it was like next to Israel and I was like, "Where Jesus  lives?" And he's like yeah it's close! I literally got so pumped I squealed with joy. I had just never net anyone from there and it was super cool. So we had a little geography lesson right there on the bridge to help hermana Rust because she doesn't know anything about countries. And we also talked about the Gospel and he was so nice! So we are gonna meet again, we decided. But seriously something that I thought was the coolest thing, I don't know about you. 

One cita I really enjoyed this week was with a woman named Magdalena. We were teaching her lesson 1 and We focused a lot on the priesthood. Hermana Lighten mentioned a blessing that she had gotten earlier from a member helping her realize what the priesthood was. She told us that she had been meaning to ask us how that man who gave her a blessing knew exactly what she was passing through in life and how he knew the words to say. We explained that it was the priesthood power. We told her that it was by that same power that we can be baptized. She said that is what she needed and committed to be baptized. I felt so much love for her when we were teaching her and it was the first time I had met her. She was so excited to be baptized but then called is two days later to tell us that she couldn't do it anymore. We were able to talk her through it and let her know that really she can do it.

 I will admit I have had some lame letters lately and I will try to be better but first I just have to tell that I had a dream this week that Bob the cat got a mission call.   I know not where he was called to serve, but I just remember wanting to pick him up and congratulate him but he kept running away because he was embarrassed. Moving on......

Our p days have been so busy. Especially last transfer, Hermana Lake always had loads of errands to run so we were always running. Today, Hermana Anderson (mission presidents wife) sat us down and told us that we all need to spend our whole p day cleaning our apartments (which I agree with her because I just got to this new one and it is sooo nasty) so I'm kinda pumped to go ham and clean it all. My poor comp is sick because all of the traveling we have done this week I'll explain that later so she is gonna be sleeping and I'm just gonna make this piso shine. I've had some comps tell me that I'm a clean freak? And i know you and dad would definitely say otherwise because... you've lived with me, but I don't know, the mission changes people 🤷‍♀️

This last Monday we had zone conference which is a 3 hour trip to Malaga there and back, so we had to wake up early and make our way down there. I don't remember if I told this to you or not but Elder Bennesar ( a French fellow in the quorum of the seventy) and his wife came to speak to us! So that means the conference was all in English which was super cool and super weird. I always love when the conferences are in English because the native missionaries speak in English too (which they never do even though most of them know English perfectly) and I just love it. The natives are awesome. But anywho back to the conference, elder Bennesar is awesome, he is just such and enthusiastic guy and he got up on a couple of separate occasions and talked to us, but some points I loved that he talked on were these: 

▪ this work is weird! Being a missionary is not normal business, the work we do is definitely weird and strange and sometimes uncomfortable, and there is always going to be a challenge, but the Lord is the master. Master of timing, and the master of His work. If we put faith in, He will show us results. I love that he explained missionary work as being strange, because It is! It's so wonderfully strange! 

▪ to be open and brave with spiritual promptings, when we respond, God will trust us more and give us more promptings. Í love when my companion will say something that she feels like she needs to do and almost always I have had the same prompting in my head. Companionships are so cool like that, God puts the prompting into both of our heads for a reason, so we can help each other out. Being open with promptings is so important. 

Also President Andrson talked so so so wonderfully about the spirit also. He quoted Elder Rasbands ? Talk from April? I think. But he talked about ALWAYS acting on the first prompting or thought that comes into your mind. And 9/10 times you will be right, it will have been the spirit talking to you. And then President talked about that one time out of ten where we aren't right, and he got a little emotional and it was just so sweet, I love that man. But he said that once in a while we won't be right, but God understands and Christ offers mercy for the times we mess up. He stressed that we cannot shrink in fear with those promptings that come into our head, but go forward with confidence. Confidence in God's deliverance and in Christ's mercy. It was beautiful. 

Also after the conference, I got a flu shot, so that's big news. Not getting sick this winter ayyeee. 

Tuesday we had a nice lesson with Paco and Beatriz! We taught the Restoration and everything was going really well, so we invited him to be baptized. He said he would do that in a couple of weeks so we are gonna be really working hard on him! They both came to the Saturday session of stake conference in their Sunday best and Paco told us that he is really trying to finish the Gospel Principles book so that he can finally start reading the Book of Mormon hahaha. We are of course all over that idea. They are really excited to have us come over and eat with them this week, as are we. 

Wednesday, sooo Preach My Gospel came out with a new chapter 8, which is the chapter we use to plan. So we got to use the new and improved chapter 8 to weekly plan this week and it was truly exhilarating. My companions have also told me that when i do Weekly planning it always takes me forever because I really like to talk about every single investigator and really find out what they need. But it's good! But with the new way, it takes so much longer! Haha I love that as missionaries we literally plan our lives around these people, and they have no idea. Such a strange work. We went to meet with Edwilder ( the less active who came from Colombia and is just turning his life around) and his mother and his nephew Justin. Justin Is 8 and he came out with his book of Mormon and told us he wanted to read it. So claro we read it with him. Edwilder mother isn't a member either but she is so sweet and stays for all of the lessons and always gives us candy, so we will probs commit her to baptism. But poor little Justin just wants to be baptized [we haven't even taught him yet) haha but his grandma says he's too young. We are really going to try to teach the whole family together, but a lot of the time not everyone is home.  Edlwilder said he is preparing to receive his endowment and him and his brother (also less active] have come to church every week and we are just so happy for them! They also brought their 14 year old niece to church who is ready to take the lessons so we will visit her on Tuesday! We are so so so excited. Milagros. 

Thursday we got back on a bus go Malaga for 3 hours and had intercambios (this week I learned that they aren't called intercambios in English and they are in fact called exchanges so that was fun to learn) Malaga is always fun to go to, there are always missionaries everywhere. I got off the bus and saw Elder Rigby from my COM district so that was cool. But yeah intercambios with hermana Solorzano  ( Peruvian, lives in Barcelona, is adorable, speaks the most pure Spanish you will ever hear in your life) it was fun to go with her and speak Spanish and practice it a little. And Hermana Pickett ( Californian, super cool) we had a lot of fun with them and they such good missionaries so we learned a lot too. And then in the Malaga bus station they have a taco bell (!!!!) Like those don't really exist in Spain so we definitely feasted there. It had been like 8 months since I've had taco bell. What a happy day.  We got on the bus to go back home on Friday and got back to Almeria at about 5:45. We had a cita at 6 so we trucked our luggage across town to our cita, taught Pilar a really awesome lesson about the Sacrament. And committed her to come to church, she really wants to but she works every Sunday morning. We asked her to pray to God and read the Book of Mormon everyday with faith that God would give her a Sunday off of work. She said she would and we said  that we would too. We are expecting miracles. And faith we do have. 

Saturday we contacted some really crazy people. We always attract crazies it seems like but hey, everyone deserves the Gospel.

Sunday we had to wake up an hour earlier than usual and go and catch a 2 hour bus ride to Granada! We had Stake Conference. The stake is HUGE so there were about 20 missionaries there so that was fun. Also before my mission, people were always sassy to me and when I asked them why, they were always like I don't know  I just feel like youre an easy person to make fun of. And then they'd usually go on and say how I'm chill and don't get offended and blah blah blah. Well nothing has changed. I meet missionaries, and even some members for the first time and they just always start making fun of me! Hahahaha I don't know why I give off that impression to people. But oh well its fun. Anyway, the conference was wonderful. I've had a stake conference every month for the past three months in 3 different areas. It's been awesome. Some members brought us food and then we buzzed back to Granada and had a lesson with Ampa.  This lesson was the definition of following the spirit. We went in with a lesson plan and threw that out the window. He needed to understand that there was one true church and one true priesthood on this earth. He has so much faith and he finally understood it! He understands that he needs to read the Book of Mormon and pray to God to find answers. So that is what he is gonna do. He also said he'd get baptized 😁.

Heellllooooo friends.

I just wanted to share a fun fact with all of you that I don't know if y'all ever knew but refrigerated milk does not exist in Spain. You just keep it in the pantry and it lasts for 2 years so that's really neat. 

Alright let me tell you about some of my friends 

So last Sunday not yesterday, but last week we called this random number on our phone of a man named Ampa. We just casually invited him to church.. and he came! So that was a pleasant surprise. And then this other family came, just out of nowhere, and they just so happen to live in one of our pueblos! So we set up a citas with all of these people and went on our merry way. 

So Beatriz and Paco. Beatriz is a menos activo and Paco is her boyfriend who we are now teaching! They live in Aguadulce which is the cutest little pueblo right on the coast and I just fell in love. We went and had a fabulous chat with them they are the nicest people! Beatriz shared a beautiful testimony and Paco just wants to jump right in and learn everything. They come to church all the time.  Paco was very animated in inviting us back to come and eat with them. Also parents, we have a place to stay when we visit 😎 

Also Ampa , we went yesterday to his house to teach him, and 2 of his cousins came in and listened as well. It was a really great lesson and they were all really excited about the books of Mormon we gave them. Yay for Africans.

So then we went to visit a man named Edwilder. He came from Colombia 2 weeks ago and he came because he wants to turn his life around. He is a member but has been inactive for a while. He is rock solid just an awesome guy. He and his brother came to the church, got interviews with the bishop and are changing their lives around. Their sisters also live there with them and they are suuuppperrr cool. They all talked to us for a bit and then we invited them to come to the ward noche de hogar and they all came! We went and picked them and they all came! They came and just had a blast and laughed and it was so fun. What a fabulous family they are. 

So for the ward family home evening we did a special Halloween edition. We made like 4 pounds of frosting so we could decorate sugar cookies and we had some relay races and Hermana Lighten and I dresses up as Mickey and Minnie. It was adorbs. 

Our area is huge and we had a lot of time to contact this week. So we walked along the beach and then turned up to walk in the outer most parts of our area. In short, we got lost, had 15 minutes to get home so we climbed up the side of an overpass, hopped a fence, and then ran down the freeway. It was exhilarating. We got home in time and let's just say it was probably good we were walking fast because SKETCH. But all in all we had a great week, 

Something funny for y'all, I was on the phone trying to set a cita with a man and he said "okay we can meet at the mall."  But of course in Spanish. And I said okay and then he said" okay we can meet at the puerta of McDonald's" ( door of McDonald's) but for like 7 minutes straight I thought he was saying"el Puente de manzanas" which means like thw bridge of apples. And I had no idea what he was talking about but I just assumed that there was something called that in Almeria and I'd find out later. But he kept saying NOOOO MCDONALD'S. And I just was not getting it and he was dying and I was dying and then finally I understood and man Spaniards just don't say McDonald's right. But Idk it was really funny for me Hahah. 

We ate some yuuuummmyy ecuadorian food this week and it was just yummy and the family was super cute and fun.
